I met photographer Fran Monks during towards the end of 2011 when she agreed to be interviewed for a project on which I’m working. I wanted to ask about How To Make A Difference, her photojournalism project where she profiles inspirational people trying to do just that …

John Coster set up the website Citizens’ Eye after coming out of prison a little over four years ago. The site, in my opinion, is one of the best examples of a civic media space in the UK. Run by a team of volunteers, with John as its Managing Editor (voluntary and unpaid, like everyone else who contributes), the Eye has 20 community news agencies covering areas as diverse as gypsies and travellers, ex-offenders, homelessness, and the environment and gives often marginalised groups and individuals a voice. In this interview I did with John (and two of his fellow editors Simon and Andy) in August 2011, he explained how the Eye came about, its ethos and how it works.
